PSAB recommends that hog producers be extremely vigilant about the biosecurity of their herds, given that the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus has just been detected for the first time in North America. Indeed, various cases have suddenly arisen in many unrelated farms in certain states of the US Midwest. Investigations are underway to establish the origin and risk factors associated with this outbreak. In the meantime, given the scale of the hog trade and vehicle movement, all North American pork producers should step up their on-farm biosecurity measures.

The virus has not yet been detected in Canada.

It is important to stress that this disease is not transmissible to humans and that it does not affect the quality of meat or meat products.
